2011 Graphic Novels Challenge

Hey guys! It's Vasilly and I'm the newest host for the the Graphic Novels Challenge. I want to thank Nymeth and Chris for keeping this challenge going strong for the rest of us in 2010. This was one of the challenges that Dewey started and I'm happy to see that it's still going on years later.

So the rules are basically still the same:

  1. The challenge starts January 1, 2011 and ends December 31, 2011. You can start anytime you want to especially if you want to start early.
  2. The level of participation: Beginner (3 comics or graphic novels), Intermediate (3-10 books), or Expert (10+)
  3. Overlaps with other challenges is definitely okay
  4. Re-reads count
  5. Feel free to post your list at any time
One of the things that will change is mini-challenges. I don't think I'm going to have them this year but I will host a monthly spotlight on one book or author every month. I'm also hoping to feature a guest post every month along with monthly prizes. So sign up!

This would be such a great challenge for me as I really need to get to reading graphic novels. However, I learned last year to leave the challenges alone! I'll look forward to reading the reviews so that I can find some good selections to pick up and read.

Like Edi, I try to leave the challenges alone. I do enter them vicariously though, I do the reading but don't always do the reviewing. This will definitely be one of my "fake" challenges I enter this year. I plan on going for expert!

After reading your Sunday Salon, I've changed my mind and I am going to officially join! No pressure of course!

Vasilly said...

Nymeth: Thanks, Nymeth for letting me host!

Edi: I understand and I hope you find a lot of helpful reviews on this site. Are you looking for certain kinds of books in particular?

Kathy: Yay! Thanks for signing up!

I tried the intermediate level for 2010, with the (self-imposed) stipulation that a series only counts for one entry, and I managed to read several. This year, I'm going to try for expert!

Thanks for keeping this going, it's a worthy challenge!

I don't have a blog (yet), but I would like to join your challenge.

Vasilly said...

Erin: Thanks for joining!

GinaB: Count yourself as part of the challenge then! Thank you so much for joining!

I do believe I'll have to give this a go. I've been enjoying a lot of graphic novels this past year or two.

Dear all,
wonder you could help me with a hint or suggestion for a graphic novel for my 16-year old niece (and perhaps for me, both Newbies). Should be written easily understandable english, nice paintings, perhaps with fairies, nice story, female heroin ?!
Thanks a lot, kind regards!
Eva, Vienna, Austria

Eva, you should try Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale. It's a retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale. There's also the Bone series by Jeff Smith that features two female heroines. Hope that helps.

Eva said...

Thanks Vasilly! I will try Rapunzel, for my niece also likes long hair :) and the not very easy family-background may be also interesting for the girl...I for myself like Neil Gaiman's Novels.

Regards! I will drop in from time to time, perhaps some of you have ideas for me. Ciao, Eva

Thanks for sponsoring the challenge. I'm looking forward to some good reading.

Sign me up. I'll try expert. I've got a pile of graphic novels I've been meaning to get to, and this should give me the kick I need.

I currently have two graphic novels and one comic book (it came with a DVD) in my collection, so I'm going to sign up for the "beginner" level. :-D

Vasilly, Thanks so much for hosting this! Last year was my first real journey into graphic novels and enjoyed "challenging" myself! And I actually finished this challenge! :-) Will be joining again this year, and I have a nice stack of great graphic novels waiting to be read that I didn't get to last challenge!

I've never participated in a challenge before but I'm looking forward to this one. It should help keep me motivated to finally get through my huge backlog of graphic novels. I'm planning to go for the intermediate level but maybe I'll managed the expert. We'll see.

I've been looking for a graphic novel challenge everywhere (found it through one of my twitter friends).
I have three boxes of comics that I'm going to re-read and a few graphic novels.
I'm going for expert. ^_^

Great challenge! I love graphic novels, manga counts as graphic novels right? Because I can most certainly do ten xD. And this will help me with my 100 books challenge.gm

I am excited for this challenge! Even though this is my first Challenge I think I'll do the Expert level and I have decided to post reviews on my blog as well http://theatrophile.blogspot.com/

I got a giveaway coming up in May. Mostly manga but there will be at least 2 graphic novels in there so keep a look out. Participants in this challenge will get extra entry points :). I'll post the link when its up.

Hi All,

So excited about this challenge! I am going to use it to broaden my graphic novel knowledge and step away from my Alan Moore obsession.

Angela said...

Hi Eva,

Your niece might enjoy one of Jane Yolen's graphic novels, perhaps Castle Waiting series or Foiled. Her graphics are whimsical and engaging, and female orientated.

I couldn't find a place to post the wrap-up, so I figured this was the best place: http://alyshadeshae.com/2012/01/06/wrap-up-2011-graphic-novels-challenge/

I only read four, but I've been trying to get my hands on more so I can read as many as possible! ^_^
